Tilt-shift photography is a beautiful and amazing type of photography in which the camera is manipulated so that a life-sized location or subject looks like a miniature-scale model.
Selective focus via tilt is often used to simulate a miniature scene, though as noted above, the effect is somewhat different from the shallow DoF in close-up photography of miniature subjects. Many such images are described as employing “tilt-shift”, but the term is something of a misnomer because the shift is seldom involved and is usually unrelated to the effect produced.
The difference between tilt-shift photography and original photography is shown in the figure below.
